In 2004 Connie Culp’s husband, Thomas, shot her in the face and then shot himself. The “shotgun blast left a ghastly hole where the middle of her face had been.” Today she is the first successful face transplant in the United States.
Connie’s husband went to prison for 7 years but Connie’s sentence was longer and more painful. She was disfigured, “unable to eat solid food, breathe on her own, or smell”.
Once while shopping, “she heard a little kid say, `You said there were no real monsters mommy, and there’s one right there,'” Coffman said. Culp stopped and said, “I’m not a monster. I’m a person who was shot,” and pulled out her driver’s license to show the child what she used to look like, the psychiatrist said.
Based on the wording in the article, it sounds like she is still married.

Seven years for shooting her and himself? Why didn’t they just finish the job he couldn’t do right himself and shoot the asshole dead? It would have saved the taxpayers a lot and given her better hope for some closure of a sort!

Most disturbing is that she said she would TAKE HIM BACK???? Wow, I think the woman needs some serious therapy.

Incredible what medics can do these days and it offers hope to lots of people with severe facial disfigurement. I hope this gives this lady as normal a life as possible after such a terrible crime.

Did she say she would take him back? I was under the impression that they never divorced in the first place.

Okay, I found one source (that I am not familiar with) that says she is willing to forgive him when he gets out of prison:
